Trenchless EV Charging Infrastructure Installation
Mole Group Utilities was approached by investment firm Valto to provide a trenchless solution for the installation of ducting to serve a new electric vehicle (EV) charging point at one of their sites.
The project presented several challenges due to the location of the proposed cable route. Approximately 20 metres of ducting needed to be installed beneath a busy estate access footpath, where conventional open-cut excavation would have caused unnecessary disruption to pedestrians and surrounding businesses. To minimise impact and maintain access throughout the works, a Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) solution was selected.
Following a detailed site meeting with both the client and the EV charging installer, it was agreed that the installation would consist of one 90mm MDPE duct for the power cable and one 38mm MDPE duct for the associated data cable, ensuring the installation met the precise requirements of the charging infrastructure.
Our experienced site team managed the project from start to finish, carrying out all excavation works to create the launch and reception pits, completing the trenchless installation of the ducting, and undertaking full reinstatement of the work areas on completion. Every stage of the project was delivered in accordance with the detailed specifications provided by the installer, ensuring a seamless and compliant installation.
The result was a clean, efficient, and future-proof solution that enabled the new EV charging points to be commissioned with minimal disruption to the estate. Once the reinstatement was complete, there was virtually no evidence that any underground works had taken place—allowing Valto to benefit from modern charging facilities while preserving the appearance and accessibility of the site.
